The son of a farmer, he was born in Houchin and lived there with his family. His vocation came to fruition at St Cyr, where he met General De Gaulle. A private at the age of 21, he rose through the ranks through his acts of bravery. In 1940, he received his 14th commendation. After the Liberation, he became commander of the 2nd military region in Lille, then Inspector General before retiring to his native village. The village elders remember him as a valiant fighter and a just man. They acknowledge his courage and humility.
